for an explanation of how these classes work. Really. Read no further until you have done that.  Or at least read About Online Workshops before you buy a workshop and before you e-mail me asking how they work.  You do not need to be at your computer at a specific time, but work at your own pace within the time frame of the course.  For the downloadable ones there is no particular time frame; you are completely independent.

New!  Downloadable Workshops

unlocking the secrets of color, color theory, jane davies, color workshop, abstract art workshop

Color is one of the most immediate and emotionally affecting elements in visual art, packed with symbolic and cultural associations, personal meaning, and expressive potential. Your choice of colors can make or break a collage, painting, or mixed media piece; even a small change in color can be the key to transforming an otherwise so-so piece into a stunning work of art. In this workshop we will explore color through hands on exercises, learning how to mix them, and how they interact and relate to one another, and how they work in composition. After taking this workshop you will be on your way to making confident color choices and developing your personal color style.

This workshop is six lessons, each consisting of of illustrated instructions in pdf format, and a video demonstration. You will find access to the videos in the document called "Downloadable Workshops" in the zip file.  Download the lessons; find the videos on a web page.  Enjoy!

Extreme Composition

sketchbook, ink, abstract art, jane davies This class is for those who want to try a non-traditional approach to visual composition. If you have some familiarity with basic principles of composition but would like to take your work in a more personal direction, this class will get you on your way.

We will intentionally throw compositions off balance, obliterate focal points, create pieces that do not hang together in a unified way, and ones that are as uninteresting as possible. This class includes an extensive handout (downloadable upon registration) that outlines the basic principles of composition, a few “rules” in the form of a check-list, examples of compositional types, and several approaches to coming up with compositional ideas.

text and image

Did you ever want to express yourself in words and images to make beautifully expressive collage? In this workshop we will explore the power of image-word relationships by pushing beyond traditional “illustrated text” or “photo with caption” formats into a world of complex layers of meaning, exciting surprises, and personal expression.  We will use found text as well as learn many ways of creating our own text.

Likewise, we’ll incorporate found images, personal photos, altered imagery (including transfers), and our own artwork. We’ll play with fanciful juxtapositions, create mood and atmosphere with color, explore new narrative possibilities, as well as learn basic techniques and principles of collage composition.

This workshop is six lessons, each consisting of of illustrated instructions in pdf format, and a video demonstration. You will find access to the videos in the document called "Downloadable Workshops" in the zip file.  Download the lessons; find the videos on a web page.  Enjoy!

Composition banner

Composition means the arrangements of elements and their relationships to one another within the frame of your painting or collage (or any art form). You can have all the drawing or painting skill in the world, great subject matter and a fantastic sense of color, but a piece lacking in compositional integrity falls short of its full potential. In this six-session workshop you will explore the elements of composition, such as shape, line, color, value, symmetry, repetition, etc., in the context of abstract collage-painting.

You will engage in creative exercises to discover how to use these elements to create balance and variety within a unified whole. You will be using acrylic paint and collage papers/fabrics primarily, but all the same principles apply to watercolor, fiber arts, and mixed media, and so forth, but to keep it simple, all the demonstrations are done in acrylic and collage.   sketchbook practice banner, online class

A sketchbook can have many roles in an artist’s practice. In this workshop we are using it as a playground of visual ideas, a place to let your muse take over, and a workhorse for developing drawing, painting, and collage skills. It is for nobody else’s eyes but your own, unless you choose to share. No matter what your level of experience is, give your inner artist a little breathing room beginning with The Sketchbook Practice Workshop. You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged.

Each of the six lessons offers drawing practice exercises, introduces a new material or technique, and challenges you to work in an open-ended way. The Sketchbook Practice Workshop will give you the tools and the confidence you need to keep creativity in your life!

This workshop is six lessons, each consisting of of illustrated instructions in pdf format, and a video demonstration for all but one week. You will find access to the videos in the document called "Downloadable Workshops" in the zip file.  Download the lessons; find the videos on a web page.  Enjoy!

Regular Online Workshops

Working in Black and White

Six Sessions, beginning July 19, 2017 - $175 Full!

black-and-white-5I am very much drawn to the simplicity and austerity of black and white, neutrals, and shades of gray, even though much of my own work relies on color. Color is a powerful language, and it’s often the element we relate to most immediately in a painting. Because it is such a strong element, we sometimes neglect other possibilities of richness and subtlety in our visual expression.

In this course we’ll explore a variety of techniques using only black and white and shades of gray. Each lesson focuses on specific aspects of painting, such as shape, depth, line, pattern, value, etc. This workshop offers the opportunity to develop your sensibilities in the more subtle aspects of painting, which you can then bring to your own art practice. I recommend that you have some experience painting in acrylics before taking this class. It is not a beginner-level class, though the techniques are very accessible.

You can find the supply list here. Please read  About Online Workshops before purchasing this workshop.

Beyond the Color Wheel: Advanced Color Studies

Six Sessions, beginning November 2, 2016 - $175 FULL!

Red Canvas copy

( Class meets once a week but no class the week of Thanksgiving) This is a workshop for those wanting to do more in-depth work that focuses on color.  We will use fairly simple formats - color field, grid, stripes, for example - in order to keep the focus on color.  We’ll explore not only color relationships, but the expressive capacity of color and personal affinities.  You’ll get a deeper understanding of your own color preferences in your artistic output.  There are a few video demonstrations, but this is not a technique class, so you will get more examples than technique instruction.

You must have an understanding of basic color relationships (primary, secondary, tertiary, for example), terminology, and experience mixing colors in your own work.

This workshop is six sessions, once each week, each consisting of illustrated instructions in pdf format, and some including a video demonstration. For the duration of the workshop you will have access to a group blog in which you can post your work, comments, questions, etc. Please familiarize yourself with the blogging process before beginning the course.

Monoprint Collage

Six sessions, beginning April 19, 2017 - $175. Full!

Discover a whole new world of artistic possibility when you combine collage and paint with monoprinting techniques. First we will layer colors, patterns, and textures on the GelliArts gel plate to create gorgeously printed collage papers.

Then we will integrate monoprint and collage techniques using masks and stencils, to build images directly on a paper substrate.  The boundaries between painting, monoprinting, and collage disappear as you gain a fluidity of process and an exciting new means of creative expression.

100 Drawings on Cheap Paper, $225.

(or paintings)

Ten sessions, beginning October 4, 2017

How do you make good art? How do you make art that is truly yours? My view is that there are no tricks, gimmicks, or shortcuts to this elusive goal: it just takes a lot of art making to cultivate your inner awareness of who you are as an artist.

Fortunately, making a lot of art is fun, if you can let go of the expectations and negative voices (that inner critic!) that get in your way. That is a big ‘if’, and the key is practice. In this workshop we will focus on quantity – making a lot of pieces (ten each week) from a given starting point.

The pieces don’t have to be “good”; they don’t even have to be finished. By focusing on particular elements each week, and creating quantity, you begin to let go of the constant judgment and evaluation that can get you stuck, and you get the practice you need to move through the ordinary frustrations of making art.

Loosen up, be expansive and generous with yourself, and have fun! We use drawing and painting media, as well as collage (optional) in some lessons.  Download the supply list.

This is an intermediate course, open to those with familiarity with acrylic painting materials and basic understanding of color. If you have taken any courses in painting, or had at least some experience with the medium, you qualify.

This workshop is ten sessions, one per week, each consisting of illustrated instructions in pdf format, and some including a video demonstration. We'll have a break at Thanksgiving and another in Decembe. For the duration of the workshop you will have access to a group blog in which you can post your work, comments, questions, etc. Please familiarize yourself with the blogging process before beginning the course.
