Improvisational Drawing

Friday, August 25, 2023 from 4 pm - 5:30 pm EDT

A 1.5 - hour Zoom workshop with Jane Davies

Many people have a tendency to plan out their drawing/painting/collage and have a hard time with the idea of not knowing how it will turn out. And yet, planning is one of the biggest obstacles to making your art. If you are constantly judging your work-in-progress against your planned or expected result, you can fail to see the beauty in what you are creating. Improvisational drawing - making it up as you go along, without a plan - gives you the opportunity to embrace the unexpected, discover new visual language, and surprise yourself.

In this zoom class I will demonstrate how I approach improvisational drawing, and then we’ll have a work period where you will do your own improvisational drawings. We’ll share as many as we can in class, but I will also create an online group in Cluster, where you can post your images and comment on others.
