Painting Flowers Together Workshop
Wednesday, May 7, 2025 from 4 pm - 5:30 pm ET
My recent blog post, What is Abstract?, is an inquiry into how people think about abstract vs. representational art. In this short workshop we focus on a subject - flowers - but you may tackle it as an exercise in abstraction or from the standpoint of representation. If you are an “abstract artist”, like me, see how you can bring your abstract sensibility to a concrete subject; if you regularly paint representational images, perhaps you can stretch into the realm of the abstract.
For inspiration, I will present a slideshow of many artists’ work based on flowers. Then, we will spend 45 minutes all together painting, drawing, and collaging flowers. At the end of our work session, we’ll have a brief discussion and look at some of the work produced. You may use whatever materials and techniques you like!
There is no expectation of finishing pieces or making good work. We’ll focus more on the discipline of showing up for practice and doing the work. I will create a group in Cluster where you can upload your work to share with the group if you like. I hope you will come away from this session with some new ideas on how to approach a subject.
All who sign up will get a link to the Zoom recording, so you can participate on your own schedule if you can’t attend the live session.
Supplies Needed:
* Your attention
* Curiosity
* A beverage of your choice
* Painting, drawing, and/or collage materials of your choice:
I recommend having several media handy - paint and painting tools; some collage papers and glue stick or matte medium; crayons, pencils, markers, pastels, and/or other drawing materials; and some decent paper to paint on. You may want to make a series of studies or work on one piece for the whole session. Be prepared for both scenarios.
* Leave out the Inner Critic and Judgement
This workshop will be recorded, so should you miss the live session you can still view the workshop recording.
