Writing a Meaningful Artist’s Statement

Four-week workshop starting on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm EDT

Writing a good, honest, and meaningful artist’s statement requires a careful examination of your work and a deep understanding of your interests and motivations. Anyone can write a generic artist’s statement - one that merely makes statements that are true of many artists. Writing one that is personal to you and a specific body of work takes a bit of soul-searching.

In this four-session workshop, you will examine your work and tease out threads of meaning that are the most resonant. This process will reveal a lot about why you make art and what is important to you about it, which is exactly the material you need for a good artist’s statement.

Consider this class part group therapy* and part writing seminar. It is limited to twenty participants and is open to those with a strong art practice who are showing or intend to show their work. We will upload work to a WordPress blog and meet weekly via Zoom for 90 minutes.

Be prepared to post your work on the WordPress blog before our first meeting. When you sign up, you will get a link to a WordPress tutorial video.

*I mean this facetiously, as I am not a therapist.

Four Weeks: Thursdays on Zoom, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM EDT

September 5, 12, 19, and October 3.

(We skip one week to give you two weeks for the last assignment).
